Cardiff boss Neil Warnock explains why he did not vote for Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo for Manager of the Year after winning the award himself.
Neil Warnock was this week named as the Championship manager of the season for his impressive work with Cardiff City.
Warnock is preparing his Bluebirds side for a top of the table clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (April 6), with victory in that game reducing the gap to the leaders to three points with a game in hand.
Many would probably be surprised that Wolves’ own boss, Nuno Espirito Santo, didn’t pick up the award after a fine first year in English football.
Yet in the buildup to the match in the Welsh capital Warnock explained why he didn’t back the Portuguese for the gong that the 69-year-old eventually won himself.
“I didn’t vote for him as manager of the season, but he’s I think done a great job,” the Cardiff chief was quoted by Birmingham Live. “I voted for Neil Harris if I’m honest. I think he’s done a remarkable job with very limited resources.
“But Nuno has done a great job, I know how he feels.
“When I won the league easily with QPR I think Paul Lambert got it at Norwich who spent more money than me – even though we were the ‘moneybags’, so I was a bit peeved.
“This is the first thing I’ve ever won and it’s great for the lads to know we’re well thought of. I couldn’t have done this without the boys.”
With only a few matches left to play in the second tier of English football it looks as if Warnock and Espirito Santo’s sides will both be going up to the Premier League automatically, with a five-point gap between them and third-placed Fulham.
Yet the race for the title is still very much on; especially if the veteran of this division manages to get one over on the new kid on the block at the Cardiff City Stadium.
