Over the weekend, Aston Villa’s problems went from bad to worse as they blew a two-goal lead against Championship leaders Leeds United.

During the match, right-back Ahmed Elmohamady was at fault for two of the visitor’s goals, including Kemar Roofe’s injury time winner.

The 31-year-old’s badly-timed header fell into the patch of the on-rushing Leeds attacker, who sealed all three points for his side and all but ended Villa’s hopes of catching the top two – they are 15 points behind the Yorkshire club in the table.

Elmohamady joined Villa during the summer of 2017 when Steve Bruce snapped him up from his former club Hull City.

During his time at the club, Elmohamady has produced steady performances and his ability to cross a ball has been useful at times, particularly under Bruce’s tactics.

However, in recent weeks, the experienced fullback has proven to be a problematic addition in Villa’s line-up because he has been at fault for three of the last five goals conceded by the Midlands club.

A fortnight ago, the Egypt international conceded a rash penalty against Stoke City as Villa recorded a 2-2 draw against Gary Rowett’s side as they dropped further points in their race for promotion.

Now at the weekend, Elmohamady showcased his inability to defend again as Villa will be surely looking to add defensive strength to their line-up in January.

Smith has enough cover on that right-hand side, with Alan Hutton, albeit he has been out of form too, and the highly-rated youngster James Bree occupying that spot.

Therefore, Villa can afford to sell the Egyptian when the transfer window re-opens next month as they should look to the future and pushing themselves up the table.
