Delph had been in brilliant form for Villa and had even earned himself a place in the England squad.
However, the 27-year-old’s switch to City has not worked out as planned. Delph has made just 19 Premier League appearances in 18 months at City – and does not seem to be part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.
With the January transfer window now open, doubts have begun to emerge over Delph’s future at the City Ground.
Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing Delph to strengthen their promotion push (The Sun), but Villa should also be contemplating making an ambitious bid to sign the former Leeds United man.
Of course, there would have to be a lot of forgiveness shown by the Villa fans if they were to sign Delph back, but he would unquestionably improve their team.
Delph may not be the most popular figure at Villa Park, but a player of his quality could drive the claret and blues up into the play off spaces.
Villa are said to have a sizeable amount of funds to spend in the January transfer window (Daily Mirror), and Bruce wants a midfielder.
It is questionable whether Villa would be able to sign another player anywhere near Delph’s quality this month, and he should be right at the top of their list of transfer targets – regardless of the way he departed the Midlands club two years ago.
