Aston Villa captain James Chester has explained why he rates Tottenham Hotspur ace Toby Alderweireld as the best centre-back in the world.

The Belgian defender has been a rock at the back for the Premier League club since his 2015 switch from Atletico Madrid.

Alderweireld, whose contract was recently extended by Spurs triggering an option until 2020, has made 136 appearances for the north Londoners, according to Transfermarkt.

In addition, the 29-year-old has featured 88 times for Belgium, helping them reach the latter stages of the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, plus Euro 2016.

Speaking to the official Villa site as part of their weekly One on One feature, Chester was asked about why he thought Alderweireld was the best in his position.

“He just never seems to be out of control, he’s always in the right position,” said the Welshman. “He’s comfortable on the ball and I really enjoy watching him play the game.”

The 29-year-old also named another world-famous defender among his personal favourites, Juventus and Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci.

“He plays in one of the toughest leagues in the world but handles it all perfectly,” added Chester. “I have great admiration for him.”

With Chester now captaining one of the most famous clubs in England, boasting an impressive career and having come through the ranks at Manchester United (Transfermarkt), it’s safe to say he knows what he’s talking about in terms of who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
