Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was questioned, ‘in the nicest possible way’, why he is still on international duty with Scotland given his recent illness, as posted on Sky Sports.
The 28-year-old missed Scotland’s 1-1 friendly draw against Poland on Thursday through illness.
On Tuesday night, the Scots will face off, once again, in another non-competitive match, this time against Austria in Vienna.
Given Robertson’s recent situation, the fact that it’s a friendly and Liverpool have a mammoth run coming up.
Then, he could have been forgiven to step aside and go back to Merseyside to prepare for Liverpool’s gruelling final few months of the season.
When the left-back was asked, by the Scottish media, why he decided to stay on, he made it clear that he just loves representing his country.
Sky reporter: “You have played 41 games this season. You are fighting on three fronts with Liverpool. I think some people would forgive you if you sat this one out. Why are you here, in the nicest possible sense?”
“To talk to you,” chuckled Robertson. “Look, I love playing games. I don’t want to be sitting in my house, if I don’t have to be.
“I am fit and well. I look forward to the games. I love coming away here, playing games with Scotland and meeting up with the boys. And being captain.
“I am looking forward to playing, then going back to Liverpool fresh and good to go for the run-in.”
Scotland were due to play Ukraine during these international breaks, with the winner edging closer to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
But, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that game has now been postponed for a later date.
In the meantime, the Scots have to get by competing against other European nations, including Austria tonight.
They were knocked out of the play-offs by Wales on Thursday, with the Welsh now waiting for the winner of the Scotland-Ukraine game.
