Why are West Ham wearing black armbands? Many have asked this on Google as the Hammers take on Brentford in Premier League action.

Both the Irons and the Bees are donning black armbands tonight as they compete inside the London Stadium, although plenty of people are not sure about the reason behind that decision.

So, why are West Ham wearing black armbands? Let’s take a look…

Why are West Ham wearing black armbands?

Well, West Ham, Brentford and every other Premier League side in action before January 2nd will be wearing black armbands in tribute to Pele.

The football legend sadly passed away after a battle with cancer on Thursday at the age of 82.

After that tragic news, the Premier League announced on Twitter that players – as well as match officials – will wear black armbands to pay their respects, while also holding a minute’s applause before kick-off.

It comes after Premier League players and officials also wore black armbands during matchday 17 to honour England 1966 World Cup winner George Cohen, who passed away on December 23rd.

A minute’s applause was also held for the Fulham legend, who spent his entire career with the Cottagers and remains the only footballer to win the World Cup while playing for the west Londoners.

Tottenham, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea – who all play on Sunday – will also take part in the tribute, wearing armbands and holding a minute’s applause to remember the Brazilian icon.

Everybody at HITC wishes Pele’s family all the best at this difficult time, and hope the three-time World Cup winner rests in peace
