Why are Liverpool wearing black armbands against Leicester? Many have asked this question on Google, as Jurgen Klopp’s side take on the Foxes in the Premier League on Friday evening.

Both Liverpool and Leicester City players are wearing black armbands tonight at Anfield, and plenty of fans will be wondering why.

Why are Liverpool wearing black armbands v Leicester?

Liverpool and Leicester City players are wearing black armbands in tribute to Brazilian legend Pele, who sadly passed away this week.

On Thursday, it was announced that Pele had died at the age of 82.

Pele, whose actual name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, passed away after a battle with colon cancer.

The Brazilian legend had been suffering wit kidney and prostate problems in recent years and had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021.

Pele was readmitted to hospital in late November 2022.

The Brazilian is a sporting icon and a footballing legend, having scored a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career.

Pele is also the only football e to have won the World Cup three times and was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.

The Premier League have announced on their official website that clubs in the English top flight will ‘remember his contribution to football at matches taking place from Friday 30 December-Sunday 1 January (Matchweek 18) by holding a minute’s applause prior to kick-offs’.

In tribute to Pele, ‘players and match officials will wear black armbands’, as well.

West Ham United and Brentford are playing each other at London Stadium in the Premier League tonight, and the players of the Hammers and the Bees will wear black armbands too.

On Saturday, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester United, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Southampton, Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle United, Leeds United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Arsenal players will wear black armbands in tribute to Pele.

On New Year’s Day, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea players will wear black armbands.
