Why Alex Neil’s dismal run is worryingly similar to past Norwich managers

As Alex Neil shows signs of redemption at Norwich City, it’s time to look at how his predecessors fared in this situation.

Norwich City fans would have come into this season with lofty expectations. Given the way they had gone about their business in the last few years it seemed likely that another promotion push was on the horizon, but it has not quite worked out in the way they had hoped. After a string of poor results Alex Neil is on the verge of being sacked, and his run draws similarities to Neil Adams.

With the pressure on a team like the Canaries to succeed, it’s easy to see why managers have crumbled under that weight in the past. The club picked up a morale boosting 5-0 victory at the weekend similar to under Adams, when they also won 5-0 before he was sacked a few weeks later.

That one game is important, but it does not necessarily offer a reprieve. Adams was also a popular figure at the club just like Neil was a few months ago, but that means nothing when results are going against you. The trigger finger among chairmen up and down the country will continue to be pulled given the right amount of pressure.

Then there’s Chris Hughton, who wound up in a routine of winning once every five or six games in order to give himself some breathing space. Hopefully that will not be the case at Carrow Road this time round, but given the level of competition in the Championship it is certainly a possibility.
