Why a move for free agent Dennis Aogo this summer would be perfect for Leeds

The former German international would be a canny addition for Leeds United if they earn promotion.

If things go according to plan for Leeds United in what remains of this campaign, they will be preparing for Premier League football in the summer, and that means targeting players who can ensure their stay is not a brief one.

While there will be money to sign new additions, Leeds boss Garry Monk will also be wise to explore the free transfer market, with one player in particular sticking out as a potential bargain.

Dennis Aogo is currently on the books at Bundesliga side Schalke but he is out of contract this summer and unlikely to be offered a new deal in the interim.

He may be 30, but the 12-capped German international still has plenty to offer the right club and his experience could be exactly what Leeds need as they navigate the top flight after so long away.

Perhaps most interestingly, Aogo would offer a solution to more than one potential problem at Elland Road.

Predominantly a left-back, he would step seamlessly into the hole left by Charlie Taylor if, as expected, the defender leaves Leeds at the end of his current contract.

But Aogo also excels as a holding midfielder, adding additional steel to a side that is currently short of numbers if not quality in that area.

Ronaldo Vieira is a future superstar while Liam Bridcutt and Eunan O’Kane have done well in the centre of the park this season, but Aogo would offer an effective alternative when required.

Wages may be an issue but if Leeds return to the Premier League they will be an enticing prospect for many players, and Aogo need only look at Pontus Jansson’s resurgence to acknowledge that sometimes a move to the Whites is the perfect step.
