Rangers are reportedly close to bringing in ex-Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, but who would partner him in central defence at Ibrox next term?
Steven Gerrard is close to reuniting with his former teammate Martin Skrtel, 33, at Ibrox this summer, after agreeing a reported £2.7million deal for the Fenerbache defender’s services, according to The Scottish Sun.
Gers supporters will remember the physical defender well from his Liverpool days, and there’s no question that Rangers are in desperate need of a commanding and experienced centre back like him, if they’re to mount a challenge for the Scottish Premiership next term.
However, at the moment, potential partnerships are somewhat up the air, as nobody truly earned a first team spot in the rear-guard with last year’s performances. The two recognised senior defenders in Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso have underwhelmed on multiple occasions, so who gets the nod?
Gerrard has been linked strongly with a move for Brighton centre-half Connor Goldson, 25, who would be available for around £1.5million, according to the Daily Star, while West Ham starlet Reece Burke, 21, is also being considered (The Mirror).
Currently it seems as though the most likely pairing would would be Skrtel and Alves, although as a two, that hardly sounds a composed central duo. Both play with an edge, using their physicality and aerial ability, and are similar in their best attributes.
Gerrard may very well have to dip straight back into the market immediately after bringing in the Slovakian international if he wants to establish a solid central pairing for the long season.
