The injury to Radamel Falcao is obviously a huge blow to Colombia, but who will be asked to replace him?
The Monaco hitman was in a race against time for the World Cup ever since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in January, and whilst the 28-year-old was named in Jose Pekerman’s preliminary squad, he ultimately had to pull out of the tournament when the squad was cut to 23.
Colombia, tipped as a dark horse for the competition by many, have seen their hopes of causing a shock diminish with the news of Falcao’s absence. However, they do still possess a number of fine strikers, so who will be looking to fill the void up front?
Jackson Martinez, Porto
The most recognisable name in the Colombia attack now is Porto’s Martinez, who has been strongly linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United over the past 12 months. The 27-year-old has hit a stunning 60 goals in just 91 games for the Portuguese outfit, and having established himself as one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, Martinez will be relied upon heavily in Falcao’s absence.
Carlos Bacca, Sevilla
Despite hitting 18 goals for Sevilla last season, Bacca could be something of a secret weapon for Colombia. The unheralded striker signed for the La Liga side from Club Brugge last summer for just €7m, and he more that repaid that with his goalscoring feats. Bacca is certainly one to watch in Brazil this summer, as Falcao’s injury gives him the chance to continue his fine club form on the international stage.
Adrian Ramos, Borussia Dortmund
Another player who was prolific domestically this season, Ramos’ exploits in front of goal earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in a bid to replace Robert Lewandowski. The 28-year-old hit 18 goals in all competitions for Hertha Berlin this season, and having impressed in the Bundesliga, Ramos can hope to make an impact at the World Cup this summer too.
Teofilo Gutierrez, River Plate
The wildcard of the Colombia attack is Gutierrez. The enigmatic striker has been capable of anything from the sublime to the ridiculous during his career so far, but the 29-year-old does possesses the quality and predatory instincts to replace Falcao up front. A relative unknown to most fans, Gutierrez could make a name for himself – but whether it’s for the right or wrong reasons remains to be seen.
Victor Ibarbo, Cagliari
Ibarbo, 24, has drawn comparisons to former Newcastle hitman Faustino Asprilla for his leggy, pacey style. Asprilla was never really prolific and the same can be said for Ibarbo, who may find himself played more out wide than up front, but his athletic ability makes him a potential impact substitute against tiring legs. Recently linked with Leeds, Ibarbo could draw even more suitors this summer.
