The midfielders are arguably the most important players in any side, setting the tempo of the attacking play and breaking up opposition attacks to start counter attacks within seconds.

There were some very good midfield performances over the weekend as sides at the top and bottom of the Premier League table saw their situations improved with vital points gained.

We’ve taken a look at the best midfielders across five statistical areas.

Goals

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson spared his side’s blushes against Swansea, allowing the Reds to gain a vital win at Anfield. Henderson’s brace showed that he’s more than a utility man across the middle, as he’s got that ability to advance into attacking areas to provide a real goal threat.

Tackles Won

It was also important for Liverpool that Joe Allen was so effective in terms of breaking up the play. Allen is a midfielder whose passion and commitment can’t be doubted and he releases players like Henderson to go into more advanced roles.

Interceptions Won

Matic read the play beautifully in the Chelsea midfield, it’s just a shame he’s not eligible to play in the Champions League this week. Matic is a big, imposing figure who is proving he’s much more than just a heavyweight who can be aggressive in protecting the defence.

Accurate Passes

Michael Carrick was more accurate than any other midfielder in terms of passing. He allowed United to build pressure against Crystal Palace and also provided a calming influence in possession when United found themselves under a lot of pressure from the London team.

Touches

Carrick also had the most touches of the ball, showing his positional awareness and ability to find pockets of space was also superb. Unsurprisingly Manchester City dominate this stat, with three stars who were always available during their win against Stoke City.
