The midfielders are the heartbeat of any side. They played versatile roles, protecting a defence and creating an extra threat behind the main strikers.

There were plenty of standout performances from midfielders in the Premier League during September and we’ve decided to focus on the best players in five key areas of the stats.

Goals

There’s nothing to separate the best players in terms of goals. Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal will be pleased to see two players in this section, with Angel Di Maria in particular having an instant impact on United’s attack. Tottenham Hotspur star Nacer Chadli also deserves a mention, with an important goal against Arsenal last weekend.

Assists

Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas has been getting the rave reviews but it’s West Ham United player Stewart Downing who had the most assists in September. His form is superb at the moment as the Hammers have been able to climb the table.

Tackles

Hull City star Mo Diame has made it very difficult for teams to play fluent football against the Tigers. He’s tackled well, breaking up the play frequently and has given Hull a real presence in the middle of their team this season.

Dribbles

Once again Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard sits at the top of the list of players with the most dribbles in September. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will also be pleased to see Jack Wilshere’s game developing and growing stronger in this area, as he provides a extra threat from midfield.

Accurate Passes

Fabregas was the most accurate player in terms of passes last month, which won’t be any surprise to Chelsea fans who have watched him play. Jordan Henderson has protected the ball well and LvG will be pleased to see another of his summer signings, Daley Blind, having an instant impact on the team.
