Who were the best Championship midfielders in September? Judge, Hughes and more

Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Brentford, Bournemouth, Birmingham City, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest and Derby County stars all feature.

The midfielders are arguably the most important players in any side in any division because they have to cover defensive and attacking elements to the game, build attacks and break down the opposition.

The Championship provided a platform for some standout midfield performances last month and we’ve taken a look at who came out on top in several key areas of the stats.

Goals

Grant Leadbitter of Middlesbrough and Ben Marshall of Blackburn take the applause for the most goals from midfield last month. Leadbitter in particular grabbed his side by the scruff of the neck on several occasions and led by example tremendously.

Assists

Brentford’s Alan Judge and Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie both finished with three assists each after September. They made key decisions at important times for their sides, which made the difference in terms of goals being scored and points being gained.

Crosses

Birmingham City star David Cotterill was the most effective Championship midfielder in terms of the number of crosses played last month. He found his intended target more times than any other player, which is significant as Birmingham have struggled over the early part of the season.

Tackles Won

Judge appears in another section for the most tackles won during September. Midfield play isn’t all about piling on the pressure and looking for goals and Judge was the best in terms of breaking up the play and disrupting the opposition when Brentford were up against it during games.

Accurate Passes

Norwich City star Alex Tettey was the most effective in terms of accurate passes played. He helped his team to protect the ball and wear sides down. It will also be pleasing for Steve McLaren to see Will Hughes on this list as he continues to grow into a more effective player.
