There are several players who instantly standout for the title of best box-to-box midfielder in the Premier League last season.

Manchester City fans will instantly say Yaya Toure wins that title hands down because he has a Premier League winner’s medal while Arsenal fans will point out Aaron Ramsey’s numbers would have been better were he not injured for three months of last season.

Chelsea also have a very talented box-to-box player in the form of Ramires who was severely hampered last season in terms of the tactical restrictions which were sometimes imposed on him by Jose Mourinho.

Liverpool’s captain would also have a say in the matter.

We’ve taken a look at five key areas to judge the best box-to-box midfielder in the Premier League last season.

Toure is clearly ahead in terms of goals but compared to Gerrard, that’s the only area he has any major edge over the Liverpool captain.

The England man is clearly ahead of his Manchester City rival in terms of tackles and interceptions, which suggests he put in more defensive shifts to help his side last season.

Gerrard’s impressive defensive stats can be explained through the tactics Brendan Rodgers used, which were based around Gerrard in a deeper role.

Aaron Ramsey’s numbers suggest that he would have overtaken everyone else last season had he not been injured for three months from Boxing Day.

He was clearly Arsenal’s standout player in midfield last season, adding goals, creating chances and providing a bit of grit and determination in defence.

Ramsey may have struggled to score another ten goals and catch Toure, but he would have got close to the City star and Liverpool’s skipper in other areas had he managed to stay fit.
