Some Newcastle United fans aren’t having Michael Owen’s message on Twitter about the club’s takeover.
After 14 years of misery, Mike Ashley is no longer Newcastle owner.
It was confirmed by the Premier League on Thursday that Saudi Public Investment Fund had successfully taken over the St James’s Park club.
This deal was four years in the making and very nearly happened in 2020, only for the wheels to come off once again.
But this time around, PIF, along with Amanda Staveley, succeeded in buying out the English businessman at Newcastle.
Shortly after the announcement, Owen tweeted that it was ‘such good news’ and that it could be a ‘game changer’ for United.
Owen is just about as unpopular a former Newcastle player as you’ll find over the past couple of decades, following his difficult spell in the North East.
Here’s how some fans of the club reacted to his comments on Twitter.
Unpopular
The former England hitman’s unpopularity has a few components.
But for the most part, it stems from an allegation made by one-time Newcastle physio Paul Ferris that Owen made himself unavailable for the club’s last game of the season in the 2008-09 campaign, a 1-0 defeat which saw the Magpies – under legendary striker Alan Shearer – relegated from the Premier League.
Owen later joined Manchester United on a free transfer and it was claimed that the injury-prone star did not want to risk a groin problem, which could’ve scuppered a Bosman move that summer.
It’s hardly the side before self mentality that Newcastle fans look for in their players and their reaction to this tweet is evidence that they haven’t forgotten – and never will.
