We pick four legendary figures for Newcastle United’s Mount Rushmore.

This Friday, the world turns its attention to the inauguration of the 45^th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. So we thought it was a fitting time to ask; which four influential figures would make it onto Newcastle United’s Mount Rushmore? Here are our picks:

Joe Harvey

Harvey made over 200 appearances for Newcastle Unted in an 8-year playing spells at the club. In that time, Harvey, a fierce and commanding half-back, captained Newcastle to back-to-back FA Cup wins in 1951 and 1952. He returned as a manager 9 years later to rescue a side languishing at the bottom end of the Second Division. Harvey achieved remarkable success in his 13 years in charge, including promotion to the First Division, the European Fairs Cup, the Anglo Italian Cup and two Texaco Cups.

Kevin Keegan

Harvey isn’t the only Newcastle legend to enjoy successful terms as a player and a manager. In the early 1980’s, Kevin Kegan lit up St James’ Park as his goals led the club to promotion from the Second Division. His tremendous record of 48 goals in 78 appearances would ensure Keegan had a hero’s welcome when he returned as manager in 1992. Keegan would take the Magpies into the Premiership and turn them into title contenders, bringing the likes of Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and Les Ferdinand to the club.

Alan Shearer

Newcastle’s top goal scorer of all-time is a certainty for the Toon Mount Rushmore. Alan Shearer signed from Blackburn Rovers in 1996 and went on to rack up 206 goals in ten years, also making him the Premier League’s record top goal scorer. Shearer led his side with goals and a spirit that makes him arguably the most iconic figure in the club’s history.

Sir Bobby Robson

When Sir Bobby Robson took charge of Newcastle the club were struggling at the bottom of the Premier League. In his five years in charge, Robson took United up the table, and did so with a charisma and love for football that resonated deeply with the Toon army. Robson completes this Mount Rushmore of Newcastle United figures as one of the most beloved managers in the club’s history.
