Leeds United defender Stephen Warnock is top of the pile in terms of interceptions this season.

The ability of any player to read the play and make interceptions is one of the best qualities they can show consistently.

It’s important for defenders to be able to intercept, especially if they’re trying to maintain a high defensive line, and it’s important for midfielders and forwards to try and intercept possession early to take the pressure off of their back four.

Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has a very young squad of players, with solid experience mixed in to try and free up the younger players to develop the way they read the game.

Here are the most intelligent players at Leeds in terms anticipating the game and knowing where to be to intercept.

Hats off to Stephen Warnock who has made more successful interceptions at Leeds so far this season than any other player.

What’s remarkable is that he would have done it playing at either end of the pitch considering the pressure on him to get forward and supply width, as well as defending consistently.

Credit also has to go to the trio of Lewis Cook, Sam Byram and Alex Mowatt who have all shown intelligence in terms of how they read the game, despite the pressure on them as young players.

Long may their form continue.
