Who is Sergio Gomez?

Sergio Gomez was signed by Man City in the summer for £11 million (Sky Sports).
The Spaniard was brought in by Pep Guardiola’s side as a left-back, after the club famously decided to pull out of the race to sign Marc Cucurella.
However, the 22-year-old has only operated as a defender for one season.
At Anderlecht in the 2021/2022 campaign, Vincent Kompany decided to play the youngster as a left wing-back.
While Sergio Gomez was a natural in the position and even won the club’s player of the season (via the official Anderlecht website), he is a right winger for the Spanish U-21 side and grew up playing as an attacking midfielder.
However, the Premier League Champions decided to bring Gomez into the side, as one assumes they desperately needed depth in the role.
After all, only Joao Cancelo qualifies as a top-quality option at left-back, after Oleksandr Zinchenko was sold to Arsenal in the summer.
In other words, however, the answer to who is Sergio Gomez is that he is a raw, but talented prospect.
Gomez Strengths & Weaknesses
A big part of finding out who is Sergio Gomez is to assess his qualities as a player.
The biggest strength the Spanish U-21 international has, which makes him an instant fit in Man City’s system is his technique.
The wonderkid is a gifted technician and is crisp on the ball, due to his roots at La Masia.
Also, Sergio Gomez is a pinpoint crosser, has a wand of a left foot and is adept going forward, both as a wide and an inverted left-back.
However, Gomez’s biggest weakness is his defensive ability, as he often gets beaten 1v1 and seems overwhelmed in physical situations.
That is partly why the Sky Blues left-back is yet to start in the Premier League since his arrival.
