Hugo Lloris’s and Harry Winks’s comments about Tottenham Hotspur potentially winning the Premier League title this season could not look any more contrasting.

Winks spoke out earlier in the week, suggesting that Liverpool and Manchester City needed to be very concerned about Tottenham’s quality.

He said to the London Evening Standard: “I think they [City and Liverpool] should worry about us.

”We’ve shown in the last few years we can compete with the best teams in the Premier League and Europe.”

But when Tottenham captain Lloris was asked the same question about his side’s chances of lifting the Premier League title in May, his response was very different.

“With humility, Liverpool and City are the real contenders,” Lloris commented to the Standard. “We’re going to try our best to challenge for top spot, but it’s difficult to find the consistency.”

There now must be a question over who is right out of the two Tottenham players.

While Winks’s comments do appear ambitious after just two matches, there is no reason why Spurs should go into the campaign with a defeatist attitude.

Winks is right – Spurs have proven they can compete with the very best.

And even though Mauricio Pochettino’s side would have to pull off a huge shock to catch City, that should be the aim of the dressing room.

Lloris may argue that his comments are more realistic and designed not to put pressure on his teammates.

But as the captain of Tottenham, he should be sending out a message to the rest of the squad that they are in the title race.

And it is hard not to feel that Lloris’s comments lack ambition, when compared to what the far younger Winks said just days ago.
