Maja Chwalińska has become one of the stories of Roland Garros, and not because she needs a romantic label to make her run matter.

The 24-year-old Polish player has gone from qualifying to the biggest match of her career in Paris.

That is the point. Chwalińska reached the Roland Garros final from qualifying after entering the tournament ranked No. 114, which makes this one of the rarest modern Grand Slam runs.

Chwalińska is not an overnight story, even if this fortnight has made her feel like one.

She made her Grand Slam main draw debut at Wimbledon in 2022, but the path before and after that moment was uneven.

After Wimbledon qualifying in 2021, she took a break from tennis after speaking openly about depression and the pressure she felt around the sport.

Injury then slowed her again. She later dropped to No. 523, which makes this Roland Garros run look less like fortune and more like a long comeback finally breaking through.

The details behind Chwalińska’s remarkable Roland Garros run

The results have carried real weight. Chwalińska beat Maria Sakkari 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 before moving through the draw and into the final.

She is now set to face Mirra Andreeva on 6 June, with a place in Grand Slam history already secured before a ball is struck.

The strongest comparison is Emma Raducanu. Chwalińska is reported as only the second qualifier in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final after Raducanu at the 2021 US Open.

The off-court details have added to the profile. Her Paris stay, late sponsor attention and repeated team food routine have all become part of the story around her rise.

But Chwalińska does not need fairytale treatment. She is a qualifier, a finalist and now a name tennis has to take seriously.
