Jack Ross was appointed as new Sunderland boss this afternoon, but who is his assistant manager James Fowler?

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman looks on prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Sunderland at Craven Cottage on April 27, 2018 in London, England.

New Sunderland boss Jack Ross will be hoping to better the Black Cats’ previous managerial regimes by gaining promotion from League One at the first time of asking.

Ross’s appointment is the first of new owner Stewart Donald’s regime and fans will be hopeful the Scot can emulate his recent success at St Mirren.

Donald took over as majority shareholder from previous owner Ellis Short earlier this week, alongside shareholder Charlie Methven, leaving fans on Wearside with a degree of optimism prior to a big summer for the club.

But who is Ross bringing with him as his right-hand-man?

James Fowler, Ross’s previous assistant from his time at St Mirren will be the man to accompany him in the Stadium of Light dugout.

Fowler comes with some impressive accolades from his time as St Mirren’s assistant manager. These include winning last season’s Scottish Championship title, leading the Saints to the IRN-BRU Cup final, getting to the Scottish Cup quarter final and saving St Mirren from relegation the season before last.

Rory Loy of St Mirren celebrates after scoring during the Irn-Bru Cup Final between Dundee United and St Mirren at Fir Park on March 25, 2017 in Motherwell, Scotland.

Both Ross and Fowler offered St Mirren a degree of stability after linking up with the Scottish side and the pair will be looking to not only emulate that with Sunderland, but to also bypass that and get the club back in the big time.

Donald has clear belief in his man, rewarding the Scotsman with a two-year-contract which could be extended if Sunderland impress in the years ahead.
