The footballing world is in mourning after it was announced that well-respected US football journalist, Grant Wahl, passed away during the Netherlands vs Argentina game in Qatar on Friday evening.
Who is Grant Wahl?
Wahl was the number one reporter on US soccer for over two decades. He was pivotal in so many Americans’ introduction to MLS, while he was a brilliant advocate for human and LGBT rights during his time reporting on the Qatar World Cup.
He wrote one of the best sports books of all-time ‘The Beckham Experiment’ back in 2009, and the archives of his podcast ‘Futbol with Grant Wahl’ are well worth a listen – particularly his recent interviews with Tony Khan and Jack Harrison.
The 45-year-old will be terribly missed by footballing fans across the globe, while he also leaves behind a loving family including brother Eric and wife Celine.

The journalist was taken ill during his reporting on the Netherlands vs Argentina game at the Qatar World Cup.
Sadly he would later pass away. His cause of death is yet to be announced.
Who is Grant Wahl’s wife?
His wife is actually a high-profile figure in US politics herself.
Wahl was married to Dr Celine Gounder for over 20 years, and she posted a tweet acknowledging the support she’s received in the hours following Wahl’s death.
Gounder herself is a well-known figure over in the US. She served as a member of the Covid-19 Advisory Board under Joe Biden during the pandemic, while she remains a regular guest on US news outlets such as CBS.
Gounder is one of the most well-respected and decorated medical professionals in America. She has three degrees from three highly-decorated Universities, while she has won numerous awards for her contributions to her field.
The 45-year-old has also worked as a medical journalist with her works being published in outlets such as The New Yorker and The Atlantic.
