Who is he?
Martinelli is a 17-year-old Brazilian winger/secondary striker owned by Ituano in the South American nation’s fourth division – although they are currently competing alongside the big guns in the Sao Paulo state championship.
What’s his playing style?
He’s a quick and skilful player who can also pass, cross and shoot accurately with either foot. He is already 5ft 11ins in height and although still relatively skinny, there is plenty of time for bulking out.
I’ve never heard of Ituano?
Perhaps, you’ll know their president, Juninho Paulista, the former Middlesbrough playmaker? The Brazilian ended his career with the Itu-based side, having previously appeared for them at youth level.
Why’s Martinelli not at a bigger club?
He was on Corinthians’ books and has had trials at both Barcelona and Manchester United since moving to Ituano. Ituano’s reported £10 million valuation of the player, who is under contract until 2022, suggests his career is on the right path.
Is Middlesbrough a more likely destination that Watford and Leeds?
The Juninho factor could help Boro’s cause, although the Teessiders (like Leeds) may struggle to fund what would be an expensive gamble while still a Championship club. Given Watford’s Premier League status, not to mention the recent success of Richarlison and their vast network of affiliate clubs in other European countries, the Hornets appear to be favourites – although that could quickly change.
