Darren Bent has stated that there will be some Tottenham fans ‘turning their noses up’ at winning the Europa Conference League, as he told talkSPORT.

The former striker questioned the Spurs fans and stated ‘who do they think they are?’ because they haven’t won a trophy since 2008.

Tottenham were due to play Rennes in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, but the game was postponed because of a COVID outbreak in the north London camp.

As things stand, there has been no forfeit and they are still in the newly-formed competition.

Although, that can change during these coming weeks if the Premier League side can’t fit the game into their now very-hectic schedule.

Nonetheless, Bent thinks that Tottenham simply have to win that trophy this season and build their foundations under Antonio Conte.

“At the end of the day, Spurs haven’t won a trophy since 2008,” said Bent. “It’s kind of ‘who do they think they are?’ In terms of turning up their nose at a potential trophy.

“I would go all out to win the trophy, then let others poke fun and ask questions about it later. They will poke fun, but imagine if you don’t win it? It’s much worse.

On Spurs fans being embarrassed at winning the ECL: “I hope not because they need to win a trophy. Yes, there will be some turning their noses up at it.”

Conte is a trophy-laden coach and there is no way that he will be taking this competition lightly – he is the modern-day Jose Mourinho, after all.

Some may question whether Spurs can win any of the domestic trophies this season or finish in the Champions League places.

Their new boss only recently walked through the door and he is going to need more time to settle in and really stamp his authority on the side.

But Tottenham’s most realistic chance of adding a trophy to their cabinet is the Europa Conference League because they are one of the top dogs of the competition and they have some of the best players.
