Football fans around the world will be in mourning this evening after the passing of Brazilian legend Pele at the age of 82.

Pele’s health has been a concern for a while now having been undergoing treatment for colon cancer since 2021.

Pele was reported to have suffered cardiac issues in November of this year and it was determined earlier this month that Pele needed greater care.

Sadly, Pele has now passed away, as confirmed by the Press Association.

Pele was 82 at the time of his death and now feels like the right time to celebrate an incredible career filled with amazing achievements.

Three World Cup wins will always put Pele as a great of the game.

Yet Pele is still Brazil’s youngest-ever goalscorer after finding the net against Argentina aged 16 years and nine months way back in 1957.

The conversation of late has all been about whether Lionel Messi is the greatest player ever, but one incredible video shows that Pele was the first to pull off a number of outstanding skills, tricks and finishes.

Who did Pele play for?

Pele actually started his career with Bauru, a club where his father Dondinho excelled. The club sadly went out of business in the 1960’s.

Pele had left by that point, signing with Santos back in 1956 – and that move set off a quite remarkable career.

With an alleged 659 appearances and 643 goals for Santos, Pele was truly incredible and won six league titles with Santos.

Add in two Copa Libertadores crowns, two Intercontinental Cups, one Intercontinental Supercup and 10 Campeonato Paulistas, and Pele’s Santos spell was sensational.

Pele never played for a European club, something that may surprise a few. These days, young South American players are usually flogged to Europe before they reach 23.

Pele did though leave Santos in 1975, signing with New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League.

Well into his 30’s by that stage, Pele was a phenomenon in America and still managed to rack up 66 goals in 107 games.

Santos and New York Cosmos were the only two clubs Pele played for, but we have to talk about his Brazil record too.

77 goals in 92 games over a 14-year spell made Pele an icon as he won three World Cups.

Pele enjoyed a career that few in the modern game could realistically pull off and his service to Santos will always be remembered.

We’ll leave the Pele, Maradona or Messi debates to you, but now is the time to dig up some Pele footage and celebrate a true great.Who did Pele play for? Legendary career profiled as Brazilian icon passes away
