Carvalhal’s fate as Sheffield Wednesday manager could be decided after Saturday’s visit of Middlesbrough.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal looks to have survived for a little while longer, despite seeing his side’s win-less run extended to six matches courtesy of Friday’s defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nevertheless, many Owls fans appear to have reached the end of their tether with the Portuguese, with chants of ‘we want Carlos out’ prominent at each of the club’s last two fixtures. And few would be surprised if the situation came to a head this weekend, with promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough next up at Hillsborough.

If Carvalhal does depart, however, who could Wednesday turn to as they look to get their own assault on the top of the table up and running?

Lee Bullen

Currently employed as Carvalhal’s assistant, the popular former Wednesday captain would probably be handed the reins on a temporary basis if the Portuguese departs. Should he impress, then a longer term position could await. Failure, however, could strain his relationship with the Owls faithful.

Gary Megson

The choice of some Wednesdayites already following his brief return to the spotlight with West Bromwich Albion. The 58-year-old was at Hillsborough for the first time since his 2012 sacking at the start of this month and would likely jump at the chance to turn around his boyhood club – again. Whether or not he could get the best out of a largely footballing side, however, remains to be seen.

Nigel Pearson

Wednesday’s most recent cup-lifting captain is currently managing OH Leuven in Belgium’s second tier, two-and-a-half years after he left Premier League Leicester City. The 54-year-old has won half of his 14 games in charge so far, losing twice, and is by all accounts happy in his new role. An approach from the Owls could be difficult to turn down, however, given his ties to both the club and the city.
