U.S. President Donald Trump worked closely alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino to ensure the 2026 World Cup is a success.
The FIFA World Cup is among the biggest sporting events in the world, with only the Summer Olympics rivalling it in global interest and scale.
The USA, along with Mexico and Canada have pulled off an incredibly memorable World Cup so far. The White House believes the credit belongs to one man.
White House Press Secretary highlights Donald Trump’s relationship with FIFA President
In a recent appearance on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt discussed the boost to local economies in World Cup-hosting cities from international fans. While praising the great cultural exchange, she also highlighted the role of President Trump in ensuring the event’s success.
“This has been months in the making. The President has worked closely with Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, and the Department of Homeland Security to secure all the venues so that the fans and players are safe. So far, so good.”
Infantino has been publicly meeting with Trump since 2018, during his first term, when the USA first won the bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
Their relationship has been more public since January 2025, with Infantino and Trump having multiple visits at dinners and official engagements to work closely on World Cup matters.
FIFA even created and awarded the FIFA Peace Prize to President Trump to further highlight their close relationship with him. All of this has definitely played a part in the logistical success of the tournament, especially in the USA.
Local economies are seeing millions in revenue during the World Cup
Press Secretary Leavitt’s comments on how positive the impact has been on local economies was a major takeaway.

“It’s been amazing to really witness and to see just the interest from around the entire world, and to see people flock to our country for these games has been really special to enjoy the United States, our food, our culture, and also the impact that this is having on local economies across the country, generating millions of dollars in revenue.”
The World Cup brings millions of travelling fans to the host country every four years. The USA’s rich and pre-existing sports culture might not feature soccer prominently, but the local communities know how diehard sports fans can boost a community.
World Cup fans in various cities have done the same, making this a memorable experience for all.
