Will these five players be England’s penalty takers?

Should England progress out of the group, it’s highly likely penalties will be needed. So which 5 players would be first to take the dreaded spot-kick?

Steven Gerrard – Captain marvel. The England skipper will want to lead from the front and dispatch a penalty to show his team mates that he can handle anything thrown at him. Not only this, Gerrard’s penalty conversion rate last season was 10/10. Exactly what Three Lions boss, Roy Hodgson will be hoping for.

Leighton Baines – The Everton full back has a near perfect record at spot-kicks at his club against Premier League keepers. The England left-back has been favourited above Ashley Cole and Luke Shaw for the World Cup and maybe this is why; in 16 attempts, Baines has converted 15 penalties. A set-piece specialist, Baines must be on that list should it go to penalties.

Rickie Lambert – New Liverpool signing Lambert has a career perfect record of scoring 34/34 penalties. The former-Southampton man was somewhat of a surprise inclusion despite his fine Premier League form. Hodgson clearly has his eye on Lambert’s ability to keep his cool and keep up his immaculate record.

Wayne Rooney – The Manchester United striker always wants to get his hands on the ball when a penalty is awarded. The 28-year-old has no fear when picking up the ball and always visualises hitting the back of the net. England will need confidence players, and Rooney is one of them.

Frank Lampard – Potentially won’t start the match, but should it go to extra-time, England will need this man on the pitch. A real super sub, Lampard has the ability to change a game; but should it go to penalties, fans will feel confident that “super Frank” will duly deliver for the Three Lions”.

Last season, these 5 players hit a combined total of 20 penalties, all 20 were scored. Can England dare to dream at the World Cup?
