Everton are said to be keeping a close eye on Norwich City’s James Maddison, reports ESPN, with the midfielder having made an impressive start to the new season.

The youngster, signed from Coventry City in February 2016, has scored four goals and provided five assists in 17 matches in all competitions in 2017/18.

This has caught the eye of the Toffees, who sent director of football Steve Walsh to watch Maddison in action during Norwich’s 2-1 Championship defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

Yet while the 20-year-old is one of the most exciting young English talents in the country currently, where would he actually fit in at Goodison Park?

See the problem is, Maddison has generally been playing as a number ten for the Canaries this term and anyone who has even been taking a passing interest in the Merseysiders’ shambolic campaign to date would know that is hardly a position in which they need more recruitment.

In fact, having to fit too many attacking midfielders into the team has been one of the key issues for former manager Ronald Koeman and current caretaker David Unsworth, with Davy Klaassen, Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson all signed over the summer.

Maddison can operate more deeply but seems to have thrived in his more offensive role and before delving into the transfer market for yet another player who operates behind the striker, perhaps Walsh should take a look at what the squad is really lacking.
