Kristoffer Ajer is reportedly set to receive a new Celtic contract.

Kristoffer Ajer’s hard work and patience at Celtic is set to be paid off as the Norwegian defender will reportedly be offered a new contract – but where does that leave fellow Scandinavian defender Erik Sviatchenko?

Ajer, 19, will put pen to paper on a new deal according to the Scottish Sun after finally breaking into the Hoops first team since his move from Norwegian side Start. He has also spent time on loan with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

He has been one of Celtic’s most consistent performers of late, organising the defence despite his young age with Marvin Compper and Dedryck Boyata suffering injuries while Jozo Simunovic’s form is questionable and Jack Hendry is still new.

Ajer has been the one to rely on for Rodgers of late and his new deal reflects that, but with Denmark international Sviatchenko’s future already in doubt at Celtic Park – does Ajer’s new deal striker the final nail into the coffin?

Loaned back to former side FC Midtjylland in January, the two signings of Hendry and Compper saw powerhouse Sviatchenko fall down the pecking order.

Now, with Rodgers placing his trust in teenager Ajer, Svaitchenko’s chances of returning to the Celtic side are fading by the second despite impressing on loan in his home country with four wins in six games.

The centre-back has two years remaining on his Celtic contract – which is reportedly worth £12,000 a week according to the Daily Star – but Rodgers may look to free up some summer cash by offloading the Dane in the summer.
