Hugo Lloris of Tottenham Hotspur might be the most relieved player going through to the World Cup quarter-finals.

The France international played 90 minutes this evening as Les Bleus maintained their bid to retain their 2018 title by beating Poland 3-1, moving into the last eight of the competition.

Goals in either half from Olivier Giroud and a Kylian Mbappe double helped Didier Deschamps’s side progress.

But the Tottenahm goalkeeper very nearly made a boo-boo.

Just before half time, Lloris, a £12 million signing by Spurs in 2012 [Mirror], dropped a routine catch from a corner on to a Poland player’s head, but he got away with it.

Lloris has been quite a liability in the Premier League for Antonio Conte’s side as of late.

And Chris Sutton has admitted that he’s simply nonplussed how the former Lyon keeper is so prone to lapses of concentration.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “What is Hugo Lloris doing?! Just come and catch it! A French fumble and the Poles nearly poke it in. Where does it come from, that lack of concentration? 142 caps. He won’t have many more if he carries on that way.”

Weeks away from being 36, Lloris might not have many more France caps to win anyway.

Whatever happens in Qatar, the Tottenham stopper may decide to call it quits in regards to his international career, but Sutton is right in saying that his gloves might’ve been under threat even now had that fumble led to a goal.

On his day, Lloris, who earns £100,000 per week [Spotrac] is a world-class option between the sticks, but moments like this are reminders of his flaws and hopefully for him and his country, there’s less of them going forward.
