Rangers are back to square one after Derek McInnes snubbed an approach from Ibrox.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is seen during the William Hill Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on May 27, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers’ decision to throw all their eggs in one basket has left them with some on their face after Derek McInnes opted against a move to Ibrox, six weeks after the manager’s position became available.

Graeme Murty will continue to steer the ship on a temporary basis until the end of 2017, a Rangers statement confirmed on Thursday. But to whom do they turn after then?

One man who’d almost certainly be up for the challenge is Alex McLeish, based on comments he made to Talksport earlier this week.

Manager Alex McLeish of Glasgow Rangers celebrates their victory with the trophy during the Tennant's Scottish FA Cup Final match between Dundee United and Glasgow Rangers on May 31, 2003...

The 58-year-old, who managed Rangers to seven major trophies between 2001 and 2006, told Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show: “It’s frustrating yes [that he’s still out of work]. I believe that my record stands up to a lot of managers who are currently in jobs but there’s some things I didn’t want, there’s some things I don’t think were right for me at this moment.

“But hopefully you’ll see me back within a club at some stage in the next year.”

Some Rangers fans already believe McLeish will be their next permanent manager – whether they like it or not – even though he’s no contact from Ibrox following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking, at least according to comments he made to the same radio station last month.

And having been out of work for more than 18 months following an unsuccessful spell in Egypt, it’s hard to imagine he’ll get a better opportunity than Rangers should the chance come his way.
