Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have dominated the Bundesliga in recent years. Only one of the past five seasons has ended without both of them in the top two, but ahead of their latest meeting there are signs that neither will have it all their own way this time around.
Bayern do currently lead the way, but only on goal difference ahead of surprise packages RB Leipzig, who have flown out the traps in their debut season in Germany’s top flight.
Dortmund, meanwhile, are down in fifth and find themselves six points adrift of top spot going into the weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s side carry a significant attacking threat; Dortmund are the highest scorers in the Bundesliga and thumped Hamburg 5-2 last time out.
The Key Battle – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang vs Mats Hummels
Hummels will be in for a frosty reception having followed the path of Robert Lewandowski by leaving Dortmund for Bayern; this is the first league return to his former stomping ground.
He could not ask for a much tougher opponent. Having served his internal club suspension last month, Aubameyang hit four in the win over Hamburg to take his season’s tally to 14 goals in as many games.

The two sides battled it out in the curtain-raising German Super Cup in August, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side running out 2-0 winners.
Last season’s meeting at the Westfalenstadion finished goalless, while Bayern have the historical edge with 48 wins to Dortmund’s 28.
