The manager-eater lived up to his name at Elland Road.
Leeds owner Massimo Cellino
Massimo Cellino’s reign (of terror) has finally come to an end at Leeds United. One thing the Italian maverick certainly seemed to enjoy doing at Elland Road was sacking managers.
The manager-eater, as he was known during his time with former club Cagliari, continued that reputation in West Yorkshire. He sacked six managers during his time at Leeds before sticking with Garry Monk, who lasted just a few days of new owner Andrea Radrizzani’s reign.
But where are those managers now?
Former Leeds United manager Brian McDermott
Brian McDermott
The Italian tried to sack the former Reading manager before he even had the authority to do so!
‘Brian? Where’s Brian’ Cellino famously quipped and on the 30th May 2014, once he was back from holiday, McDermott was sacked.
He went on to work at former club Arsenal as chief scout before taking up the vacant manager role at another former club, Reading.
His second spell in Berkshire was not as fruitful and he lasted just six months.
Now back scouting for Arsenal.
Former Leeds United manager Dave Hockaday
Dave Hockaday
Nothing summed up the Cellino whirlwind approach to management appointment more than the decision to give Hockaday a job.
The former Forest Green Rovers manager lasted just 70 days before he got the sack.
He went on to work with non-league side Swindon Supermarine temporarily before a role at Coventry City which saw him briefly become caretaker manager. A spell in charge of Kidderminster Harriers was a failure, lasting just two months.
Now he has his own football academy in Swindon and is the Head of Male football at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
Former Leeds manager Darko Milanic
Darko Milanic
A leftfield appointment but he had credentials, leading Maribor to four Slovenian league titles.
He left Sturm Graz to become Leeds boss in September and just 32 days later he was sacked, failing to win any of his six games in charge.
After serving a period of gardening leave, he returned to Maribor and led them to the Slovenian league title last season.
Former Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn
Neil Redfearn
Heralded for his work with the Leeds academy local-boy Redfearn took over from Milanic and was popular with fans.
He was not however as popular with Cellino and his pals and had a tumultuous and controversial period in charge before a bitter departure from Elland Road in July of last year.
He went on to have a difficult spell in charge of Rotherham United and is now a regular commentator and analyst on Radio Yorkshire.
Fleetwood Town’s manager Uwe Rosler
Uwe Rosler
The German was supposed to signal the dawning of a new stable era at Leeds, until he was sacked after just 12 games.
He took over at Fleetwood Town last summer and has since gone on to turn the Cod Army into promotion contenders in League One, where he took his side to the play-offs.
Ex-Leeds’ manager Steve Evans
Steve Evans
The one-man soundbyte was not a popular choice but did a good job at Leeds. Not good enough though, as he was let go by Mr. Cellino last summer.
Took over at Mansfield Town in November last year and will be hoping to guide the side to League Two promotion next term.
