Five years on and it has been mixed for those who decided not to drop down with the Gers.
General View of Ibrox Stadium
This summer it will be five years since Rangers were forcibly relegated to the bottom tier of Scottish football after their financial meltdown.
When that happened the club cut their losses on several players, but also saw 11 reject the transfer of their contract to the new company and head elsewhere for free.
But what happened next?
Here is the story of the 11 that left Rangers in that way five years ago…
Rhys McCabe celebrates scoring their first goal with David Prutton
Rhys McCabe
The talented youngster decided the fourth-tier was not for him. He headed to Sheffield Wednesday. He struggled for first-team football at Hillsborough, had a spell on loan with Portsmouth and joined Dunfermline Athletic after being released in 2015.
Sone Aluko
The Nigerian only spent one season at Rangers following a transfer from Aberdeen. He left for Hull City and after four years joined Fulham last summer, where they are pushing for promotion.
Steven Whittaker celebrates after scoring the second goal for Rangers
Steven Whittaker
The versatile Scottish international joined Norwich City that summer, where he remains today. Out of contract this summer.
Steven Naismith
Went on to shine with Everton for some time but is now a team-mate of Whittaker’s at Championship side Norwich City.
Jamie Ness
One of Rangers’ talented youngsters at the time the midfielder has struggled since his exit. Joined Stoke, but had no impact, and went to Scunthorpe United in 2015. Remains at Glandford Park.
Kyle Lafferty – Rangers
Kyle Lafferty
One of the bigger names to leave Rangers that summer. He joined Swiss side FC Sion and has gone on to play for Palermo, Norwich and Caykur Rizespor and Birmingham City on loan.
Still at Norwich, but is perhaps best known for his heroics with the Northern Ireland football team.
Allan McGregor
The Scotland goalkeeper went on to spend one season with Turkish side Besiktas before joining Hull City.
Currently on loan at Cardiff.
Steven Davis
The Northern Ireland international has perhaps done the best since exiting. He joined Southampton in the Premier League and remains with the club today.
John Fleck in action for Rangers
John Fleck
Once considered the Wayne Rooney of Scottish football the 25-year-old was already falling out of favour at Ibrox when the club went bust. He joined Coventry City in 2012 and after four years signed for Sheffield United in the summer.
Now helping the Blades to promotion to the Championship.
Tom and Kim Skosgrud
Signed from Manchester City the Norwegian twins decided to leave rather than push for first-team football.
They both signed for Sandefjord that summer.
Tom has gone on to play for Kongsvinger and Moss in Norway and Icelandic side IBV. Now playing for Skeid Oslo in the Norwegian third-tier.
Kim spent time on loan with Strommen and now plays in the fourth-tier with Egersunds.
