Where are they now? Swansea’s young guns; featuring Ben Davies

We catch up with some of the Swansea City youngsters to leave the club in recent years.

Former Swansea City youngster Jernade Meade is currently playing his football abroad.

The Swans signed Meade, then a 20-year-old, back in 2013, but the left-back failed to break into the club’s senior first team. Following his release a year later, Meade had a spell with non-league side St Albans City before moving to top-flight Swedish side AFC United last February.

Lee Lucas is playing his football slightly closer to home. Lucas’ 15-year association with Swansea ended in the summer with a move to Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. The midfielder has featured 10 times during this campaign, including their recent 7-2 defeat to Aberdeen.

Gwion Edwards and Joe Walsh are among the ex-Swansea youngsters to be plying their trade in League One.

Edwards, who left the Swans in 2014, is now playing for play-off pushing Peterborough United. He has been a regular in Grant McCann’s starting-eleven, scoring 7 goals from midfield in 32 appearances.

Walsh spent last season on-loan with Crawley Town, but has returned to MK Dons to reclaim a regular spot in the heart of their defence.

David Cornell and Kenji Gorre are both playing for Northampton Town. Cornell is currently back-up choice to ex-Leicester City youngster Adam Smith, while Gorre scored the winning penalty for the Cobblers in their EFL Cup win over West Bromwich Albion.

Rory Donnelly’s Gillingham are fighting to finish above Northampton. The forward, who was released in 2015, has made over 70 appearances for the Gills in his two-year stay at the club.

Meanwhile, Jazz Richards, Ryan Hedges and Shaun MacDonald are all playing for Championship clubs.

Richards has been part of Neil Warnock’s turnaround at rivals Cardiff City. The defender has play every minute of their recent unbeaten run of four games, which has included wins over Leeds United and Derby County.

Hedges left the Swans for high-flying Barnsley in January after impressing on-loan at Yeovil Town earlier in the season. He made his league debut for the Tykes as a late substitute in their 0-0 draw with Preston North End.

MacDonald spent five years at Bournemouth after leaving Swansea in 2011. The midfielder is hoping to help Wigan Athletic avoid the drop to League One.

Of course, Ben Davies continues to feature for Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The left-back has featured in the Champions League and the Europa League for Spurs this season.
