When did Newcastle last win a trophy? Many have asked this on Google as Eddie Howe attempts to make history at Wembley.
The Magpies face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday after recording a 3-1 aggregate win over Southampton in the semi-finals.
It represents an opportunity for Howe to win the first trophy on offer for English sides this season, and the first in many years for Newcastle – but how many years to be exact? Let’s take a look…
When did Newcastle last win a trophy?
Well, it has been far too long for a club of Newcastle’s stature – to say the least.
Newcastle last lifted a piece of major silverware back in 1955 when they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
If you consider the UEFA Intertoto Cup to be a serious trophy – which Newcastle won in 2006 before it was abolished in 2008 – then the silverware drought does not seem as bad.
You could also argue that the 2016/17 Championship title secured under Rafa Benitez is technically a trophy, although few people consider it to be a major honour.
For a football club as huge as Newcastle, it has been far too long without a significant title.
While the likes of Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi will surely have their eyes on securing the Premier League and Champions League a few years down the line, winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday would be a fantastic way to kickstart their reign.
What trophies have Newcastle won?
Newcastle have actually won quite a few trophies in their existence, although – like the UEFA Intertoto Cup – many are not recognised to be significant prizes.
