England are through to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 3-0 win over Wales at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium tonight.
The Three Lions needed to turn in a better display than in Friday’s 0-0 stalemate with the United States.
The first half wasn’t much to write home about but Gareth Southgate’s men turned it on in the second half.
Marcus Rashford curled home a beautiful free kick to set England on their way with Phil Foden adding the second just moments later.
Rashford fired in number three for England and secured top spot in Group B with seven points from three games.
When is England’s next fixture?
By finishing top of Group B, England will now face the runners up from Group A.
This also means that England head into the bottom half of the World Cup knockout bracket, potentially lining up a quarter-final clash against France.
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves though as an awkward last 16 clash awaits.
Senegal’s 2-1 win over Ecuador gave them second place in Group A today, sneaking in behind group winners the Netherlands.
Senegal will therefore meet England in the last 16 and the game will take place on Sunday, December 4th.
The game will take place at Al-Bayt Stadium – the same venue where England could only manage a 0-0 draw with the United States.
Kick off will be at 7pm UK time and will be the second game of Sunday’s schedule, following on from the Netherlands against USA.
As per 11v11, England have never actually played against Senegal and Aliou Cisse’s side represent a tricky challenge.
Premier League players like Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye, Nampalys Mendy, Cheikhou Kouyate and Pape Matar Sarr are all in the Senegal squad.
Sadio Mane may be out through injury but this Senegal team can still pose problems for Southgate and co on Sunday.
