Ian Wright was left baffled by Nuno Tavares failing to do ‘one of the easiest things in the game’ as he committed a foul throw during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

On Monday night, Arsenal handed over the keys to Champions League football to their north London rivals – but it came after Mikel Arteta’s side shot themselves in the foot.

Tavares’ foul throw led to Newcastle’s opening goal and it summed up Arsenal’s evening – abject beyond belief, no wonder Granit Xhaka wasn’t a happy bunny after the game.

The 22-year-old left-back has had a pretty dramatic debut campaign in England’s top-flight, and in truth, things have become bad to worse as the season has gone on for the player.

But Tavares’ actions didn’t sit well with Wright, who told Premier League Productions (16/05/22 at 10:10 pm) that it’s something that your P.E teacher would go ‘crazy’ at if you did it in school.

“What are you doing?” asked Wright. “It kind of sums up Tavares’ career, up to this point.

“It has been very up and down. We know he’s a very good player. But to take a foul throw. We shouldn’t be seeing this.

“When I was at school, you do that and then our P.E teacher would go crazy. It’s one of the easiest things in the game.

“Off on the back of that. They then get the throw-in, switch the play, then Cedric he doesn’t close the line off from Saint-Maximin and they are straight into our back four (to score).”

TAVARES’ FOUL THROW SUMS UP ARSENAL’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MELTDOWN

Only last week, Arsenal were one win away against Tottenham and Champions League football was sealed.

But, remarkably enough, they are in such a situation where they now need already-relegated Norwich City to help them to a top-four finish on the last day of the season.

The meltdown from this Arsenal team has been one the players might not recover from and it puts serious pressure on everyone heading into the summer and next season.

From the players Arsenal will bring in, to how they start next season, any small blip now and the fans will react in a pretty angry fashion.
