Speaking to GQ Sports, Raheem Sterling has been reviewing some of his past and present teammates, and he’s been speaking about Steven Gerrard.
It feels like a long time ago now, but Sterling and Gerrard, of course, played together at Liverpool when the winger was just coming through as a young talent.
Sterling had great memories of playing and sharing a dressing room with Gerrard, stating that the midfielder was an inspiration to him and took him under his wing when he was coming through.

Sterling praises Gerrard
The Chelsea ace spoke about his experiences with Gerrard.
“Gerrard. When I was at Liverpool he took me under his wing. He was an inspiration for me when I was younger. Obviously watching him on TV and being in the dressing room with him. Of course, the athlete that he was, he carried Liverpool and won them a Champions League. He was someone that will help you and try to guide you, it was a massive relief for me and made my time with the national team a lot easier,” Sterling said.
Great leader
That’s what made and makes Gerrard such a fantastic leader.
Many established pros can think they’re above mentoring and helping the young players who come through, but Gerrard was more than happy to help Sterling when he was a budding star.
Without that sort of welcome into the Liverpool dressing room, Sterling may never have become the star we all know him as today.
Unfortunately, Sterling and Gerrard couldn’t win a Premier League title together after coming so close in 2013/14, but it still sounds as though Gerrard’s influence on Sterling helped shape the England star’s career.
