Niklas Sule has opened up on why he decided to sign for Borussia Dortmund this summer despite strong interest from Newcastle United, who were keen on landing the German international.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, the centre-back revealed that talks with Dortmund were the deciding factor on Sule signing for the Bundesliga giants, with the defender keen to win trophies and usurp Bayern Munich at the top of German football.

Sule spent five years in Bavaria where the centre-back established himself as one of the best defenders in Europe, though injury problems saw the 26-year-old’s playing time become limited, with the former Hoffenheim star deciding to move on from Bayern this summer.

Despite strong reports of a £20m move to Newcastle, Sule opted to sign for Bayern’s biggest rivals in Germany, Dortmund, with the Bundesliga giants also landing Nico Schlotterbeck in successive transfers that could make the Black and Yellow a strong contender for the title next season.

Indeed, Sule would have been an outstanding signing for Newcastle this summer, but as the defender explains, Dortmund’s project and their ambitions for next season were simply too good to ignore for the Frankfurt-born Germany international.

Sule said: “When I talked to the club, I felt a real connection with the club’s ambitions, with what I’ve experienced in my career so far and what I still want to achieve. The chance to achieve those goals with Borussia Dortmund was an incredibly exciting prospect and I can’t wait for next season.”

Newcastle’s project is of course one of the most exciting in football, with the Premier League side likely to challenge for titles and European silverware within the next ten years if they follow the same trajectory as Manchester City and PSG, yet for Sule, the defender made the right choice signing for Dortmund.

After all, the Bundesliga giants have big ambitions next season, and whilst they have lost Erling Haaland this summer, Dortmund’s transfers have been incredible, to say the least, with Sule just the tip of the iceberg for who the German side have brought in and the potential fireworks that could happen with this new-look squad.
