Ian Wright has admitted that he didn’t expect Luka Modric would have the career he has had after leaving Tottenham for Real Madrid in 2012.

The Arsenal legend says Modric will go down as an ‘all-time great’ after winning every trophy possible on the domestic stage, including a stunning five European Cups in the famous colours of Real Madrid.

Modric was 26 when he first joined the La Liga giants and the first season was a disaster, including being dubbed the worst signing.

Now 37-years-old, if Modric retired tomorrow, then he would go down as one of Madrid’s greatest-ever players.

Wright thinks his status will be even higher than that, but he didn’t see it coming when he was working his magic in north London, as he told ITV Sport.

“No, no, I think he is going to go down as an all-time great as well,” said Wright. “Especially if you look at what he has won.

“We were talking about him when he was at Spurs. I thought ‘yeah, there is something about this guy’. But I wouldn’t have thought that he would go on to do what he’s done.

“When you look at him as a player now and his longevity in this team – he is, for me, one of the greats.”

MODRIC STILL GOING…

Most players by 37 would have retired and put their feet up. In truth, if Modric wanted to do that, then he could, because, on the domestic scene, he has nothing more to give.

But that engine is still going, including for its final lap on football’s biggest stage on Saturday.

Croatia were crushed when Argentian booted them out of the World Cup this week, but they have a chance to secure third place against surprise package, Morocco.
