Leeds United clearly need to improve if they are to win promotion.
Leeds United’s early season promise has been shown up as a false dawn, with the club slipping down to 10th in the table.
Their squad appears flawed, with concerns in goal, in defence and up front.
A new goalkeeper has to be a priority, but the club have been urged to concentrate their money on strikers.
Former Leeds player Noel Whelan spoke to BBC Radio Leeds after the midweek 4-1 loss to Wolves.
Citing Wolves as the model which Leeds need to follow, Whelan suggested that forward positions will make the difference when it comes to winning promotion.
He said: “Leeds need to spend money on the right players across the forward line.
“They need a quality midfield player to help the young boys out. You have got to sign forwards to score you goals, they will be the difference.”
What has been clear this season is that Leeds have not replaced Chris Wood effectively, with the striker sold to Burnley in August after finishing last season as the Championship’s top goalscorer.
Leeds sit in 10th place and are only three points off the play-offs, and smart spending in the January transfer window could yet transform their fortunes.
A goalkeeper must be a priority too, and it is somewhat of a concern for Leeds that it is easy to identify positions throughout the XI where they need strengthening midway through the season after a busy summer of recruitment.
