Noel Whelan has revealed on BBC Radio Leeds what Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear told him about Jamie Shackleton’s performance against Derby County on Saturday evening.

Shackleton, who can operate as a midfielder or as a wing-back, featured for Leeds in the first leg of their Championship semi-final tie against Derby away from home at the Pride Park Stadium.

The 19-year-old came on as a substitute for Adam Forshaw in the 24th minute, and he looked sharp, creative and energetic and worked hard.

According to WhoScored, the teenager took one shot, had a pass accuracy of 76.9%, made two tackles and one clearance, and played one key pass.

Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds: “I spoke to Angus about Shackleton’s performance. He was overjoyed. I said that I would have liked to see him a little bit more this season because we know what he brings to the side, and he was saying the same things. He is full of energy, he is full of enthusiasm, he is direct.”

Leeds won the first leg 1-0, thanks to Kemar Roofe’s goal in the second half, and Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be favourites to progress from the tie.

It will be interesting to see if Bielsa decides to include Shackleton in the second leg at Elland Road on Wednesday evening.
