Leeds were held to a 0-0 draw with Fulham last night.
Noel Whelan has praised Conor Shaughnessy’s performance against Fulham last night in the 0-0 draw at Elland Road.
Shaughnessy partnered Pontus Jansson in central defence after Liam Cooper picked up an injury in training.
It was Shaughnessy’s first ever Championship start, with the defender making his debut in the opening game of the season as a substitute in the 3-2 victory over Bolton.
Former Leeds striker Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds that he was impressed with his performance.
He said: “He was excellent, he grew into the game, he got better and better, just a couple of loose passes.
“A tackle in there saved the game. He did what a centre half should do, covering ground. He was aggressive all evening, I love that about a centre half.”
Whelan was asked to pick a man of the match and responded to comment that he felt unable to do so, instead selecting three players who stood out.
He said: “Saiz was excellent, Anita had a really good game at left-back, unnoticed, Shaughnessy had a good game. Collectively as a team there was hard work, aggressive, just without the goal.”
Leeds remain unbeaten after three league games but there is a sense of missed opportunity, with two 0-0 draws at home in a row.
New boss Thomas Christiansen appears yet to settle on his best XI, with the team stretched defensively and spoiled for choice in midfield, a dependence on Chris Wood for goals has hurt, with back-up striker Caleb Ekuban left as an unused substitute.
