Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Jonás Gutiérrez randomly tweeted to say ‘thanks forever’ to the Magpies and supporters.
What’s the story?
Well, one Newcastle fan asked what the Argentine’s tweet was in relation to, and we’d love to know the answer – if there is an answer, that is.
Gutiérrez may just have been expressing his gratitude to the Magpies and the Toon Army for the love he receives from them, even to this day.
However, the timing was certainly random, which sparked the Newcastle fans into a discussion on Twitter.
Some called for Gutiérrez to have an ambassadorial role after the takeover, while others requested a statue for the South American cult hero.
The 38-year-old famously battled back from testicular cancer to score the goal which kept Newcastle in the Premier League in May 2015.
Overall, Gutiérrez made 205 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 12 goals while recording 27 assists.
Newcastle must offer Jonás Gutiérrez something
The way in which Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew shoved Gutiérrez out of St James’ Park still makes us feel quite sick.
Gutiérrez told talkSPORT that he feels Ashley deliberately made it so that he failed to trigger an automatic one-year extension to his contract in 2015.
The Toon hero needed to start 80 games to trigger the clause, but only managed 78 after missing a number of matches due to his chemotherapy treatment.
Gutiérrez, quite rightly, sought a £2m payment on the grounds of disability discrimination, a case he ended up winning (Guardian).
Despite the £2m payout, no amount of money would be able to amend that horrific treatment.
As a result, we feel Amanda Staveley should bring him back to Newcastle in some capacity, so a packed St James’ Park can truly show their appreciation.
