Celtic will reject £25m offer from Everton for Kieran Tierney as they hold out for “astronomical offer” – but what could that be?

Kieran Tierney of Celtic holds the Scottish Cup Trophy following the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic are not going to let Kieran Tierney leave the club easily, with the Sunday Mail reporting an opening bid from Everton of £25m will be rejected as they seek an “astronomical” offer.

It had been reported by the Liverpool Echo, who also state that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Tierney, that £25m was what the Scottish champions valued the youngster at.

How much is “astronomical”?

If Tierney is sold then the Hoops will smash the transfer record received for one of their players, which currently stands at the £13m (BBC) Southampton paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2015.

Van Dijk’s sale to Liverpool in January for a world record £75m (BBC) has also eclipsed what clubs can expect to get for the sale of defenders.

That said, selling Tierney for more than £25m would still put the 21-year-old among the most expensive of all time in his position and on the face of it a potential deal seems to be most similar to that of Luke Shaw’s in 2014.

Luke Shaw of Manchester United in action during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Watford at Old Trafford on May 13, 2018 in Manchester, England.

Manchester United signed Shaw – a fellow left-back who was 18 at the time and had impressed as a youngster – for an initial £27m that could rise to £31m (BBC).

That may have now been four years ago but anything around this would represent an impressive deal for the Glasgow club, despite the fact they do not want to lose Tierney and the Scotland international is among the most exciting young talents in Europe currently.
