It’s been a turbulent few years for Gabriel Agbonlahor, which has left many wondering what his next move will be.
Aston Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor
After being named club captain at the start of the 2015/16 season, it seemed as if Gabriel Agbonlahor was ready to lead Villa into a successful campaign – but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Having been dropped from the starting line-up following the introduction of new manager Rémi Garde, there was speculation that the Birmingham-born Agbonlahor was set to leave the club in January.
Whilst this didn’t come to fruition, he may as well have left, as his absence from the first team continued with a few sporadic appearances here and there. Then in April, the forward was pictured holding a shisha pipe and laughing gas canisters in two separate incidents, leading to a suspension and investigation from the club.

Now five months on, Agbonlahor made his competitive return on Monday in an under-23 match against Fulham. He put in a disappointing performance in what was his first appearance since playing in a few pre-season friendlies.
New manager Robeto Di Matteo has stated that the club veteran is not a part of his plans, however Agbonlahor still turned down the chance to join fellow Championship side Reading on loan in the summer. There have been talks of a potential move to the MLS, but it really is a mystery as to where the next stop on this journey is for the Englishman.
Getting him fit and fighting for his place may well be the best course of action for Villa, as when he’s on form he can be a valuable member of the first team that the fans can cheer for once again.
