Gary Neville has questioned ‘what has gone wrong?’ with reported Arsenal target, Marcus Rashford, as he questioned on Sky Sports.
Former Manchester United midfielder, Roy Keane, also added that he thinks players like Rashford aren’t trying hard enough when handed a chance.
On Sunday, Rashford came off the bench to watch his Manchester United side get ripped apart 4-1 by their neighbours, Manchester City, yes watch, because he didn’t exactly pull up any trees during his time on the pitch.
Since then, rumours have emerged that the 24-year-old is considering leaving Old Trafford, as 90min reported that Arsenal are amongst the clubs who are keen to bring him in.
Given that Man United had so many forwards missing from the weekend, Rashford still couldn’t get into Ralf Rangnick’s XI, as Keane and Neville didn’t hold back in their criticism and questioning of the player.
“Rashford comes on, sometimes you feel a sub will do something special,” said Keane. “They are that upset that they are on the bench, they don’t try hard enough.”
Neville on Rashford: “At the start of the season, if you are saying ‘Marcus Rashford is on the bench. Cavani, Martial, Greenwood and Ronaldo aren’t here’, then you would be asking ‘what’s gone wrong?’
“That has got to be the ultimate in putdown for Marcus Rashford. The four other centre-forwards aren’t here and he still can’t get in the team.
“It tells you where Rangnick thinks he is at and where Rashford’s form has been.”
It was against Arsenal that Rashford burst onto the scene as a fresh-faced teenager and announced himself on the Premier League stage.
From there, things did move forward for the versatile attacker, from becoming a regular at his boyhood club and representing his country.
Whilst Rashford was selected for England’s Euro 2020 squad in the summer, he was perhaps fortunate to make the cut because he didn’t exactly go into that tournament on the back of great form.
And, since then, he has fallen further away and, as things stand, it would probably do him the world of good to leave. But would a club like Arsenal suit him? Probably not.
Whilst Mikel Arteta needs forwards, Rashford’s record of 59 goals in nearly 200 Premier League doesn’t exactly jump off the page, then there is the possibly inflated fee.
The Gunners are better off putting their money on the table for an out-and-out striker, rather than one struggling at their rivals.
